Wine Description
Wines from the beach! This terrific red wine is made from the native Castelao grape. Medium-bodied ruby color shows a generous nose of black cherry, cedar and toasty pine nuts. Dried red & black berries, rustic minerality & pleasingly bitter-tinged finish. Really great flavor and character from this Portuguese red.
The CHAO wines are grown in the Colares wine region near Lisbon on the Atlantic Coast of Portugal. To plant the vines, the sand is excavated and the vines planted on the clay layer beneath, about 12-16 feet down, and then the cane is progressively buried in sand as it grows. This practice has resulted in the survival of the most acreage (12-14) of pre-phylloxera vines in Europe.
