ERIC BROEGE, Co-owner & Wine Director
CAROLYN KEMP, Co-owner & Manager
Since January 2000, Eric Broege and Carolyn Kemp have been building VINTAGES Adventures in Wine into the Boston area's best wine shop. Early on, husband and wife traveled to Italy for the annual wine fair, Vinitaly; their passion for Italian wine was ignited, and they never looked back. At the same time, Eric was also visiting cellars in France and Spain seeking out original, authentic wines. During his trips, Eric often discovers superb, small-production wines and cellar-aged wines that are not available in our market. These gems are brought just for us as VINTAGES EXCLUSIVES.
In 2008, VINTAGES opened a second shop in Belmont to bring our discoveries to a new audience -- visit this gorgeous shop with its famous "wall of Italy!"
What makes VINTAGES a compelling wine destination?
Hand-picked by wine director Eric Broege, VINTAGES' Italian wine selection is unparalleled. Featuring top producers in every region, as well as little-known artisan wineries and older vintages of select Barbarescos and Barolos, the "wall of Italy" in the Belmont shop is a region-by-region tour of the Italy's extensive wine heritage.
Further, VINTAGES offers an outstanding selection of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Rhone wines, as well as "grower-maker" Champagnes. Spain is well-represented with top producers from Priorat, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, as well as and other emerging regions.
Eric was one of only a handful of U.S. retailers invited to the Alba Wine Exhibition in Piedmont, Italy. This prestigious event is designed for wine journalists to taste the new releases of Barolo, Barbaresco, and other wines, with access to nearly all the major wineries in the region. It is a distinct honor to be invited and an acknowledgement of Broege's extensive knowledge of these wines. Traveling to Italy several times a year, as well as regular visits to France, promote that direct connection with producers and the land that most merchants never establish.
What sets us apart from other wine shops?
The "wine experience" we offer to our customers. VINTAGES' passion for great wine and new discoveries translates to exceptional wine tastings at our shops. Our wine dinners at top area restaurants are legendary: from Roberto Conterno, Marta Rinaldi, Pietro Ratti, Luca Currado, Aldo Vacca, Renato Vacca, Tommaso Bussola, and many more. Our landmark vertical tastng of 40 years of Barbaresco from Produttori del Barbaresco with director Aldo Vacca was held in Boston before wine critics ever thought these wines could mature so magnificently.
Part of the wine experience is learning about wine, why "place" matters, why differences between vintages may be something to highlight, not hide. The often fascinating stories behind the wine– vineyard, estate, and people. And most of important of all, what will you be eating tonight? Wine and food — from the everyday, to the ultimate– is at the heart of our passion.
From the reputable and rare, to the under-the-radar artisan, it's at VINTAGES Adventures in wine.
