BE MY BARBARESCO! WINE TASTING Fri & Sat. Feb. 13 & 14
BELMONT: Fri. Feb. 13, 4-7:30 pm
CONCORD: Sat. Feb. 14, 2-5 pm
Friday the 13th? It’s your lucky day! Please join us for a “sweetheart” of a wine tasting featuring BARBARESCO, the elegant, enigmatic, age-worthy red from Piedmont, Italy. BARBARESCO is named for a small town in Piedmont that is home to a number of outstanding producers, from the highest quality cooperative in the world, Produttori del Barbaresco, to the legendary Angelo GAJA. BARBARESCO is made from 100% Nebbiolo, the same grape that is in BAROLO. Engaging both head and heart, heart and soul, this is a wine worth getting to know.
BARBARESCO: What is it? What’s so great about it? What are its signature characteristics? When should I drink it?
Learn about this world-class wine on Friday, February 13 in Belmont, and Saturday, Feb. 14 in West Concord. VINTAGES’ ERIC BROEGE, wine director and Italian wine expert, will pour and discuss the attributes of this powerful, yet elegant wine that can be challenging to appreciate and understand.
2005 CANTINA del PINO, Barbaresco $49
The 2005 vintage has a special meaning for us – we were in Barbaresco for the 2005 harvest in late September. Every winery was a round-the-clock beehive of activity – picking, collecting, crushing, fermenting – all hands on deck to get the grapes in at the perfect moment. At Cantina del Pino, Renato Vacca, his father, and a teenage helper formed the entire crew. We have known Renato since the early years of his winery—once part of the Produttori, he spun off to create wines under his own label. We have been enthusiastic supporters of his outstanding wines over the years, and are happy he is now getting the official acclaim he deserves. His Barbaresco is a beautiful balance of traditional and modern methods that perfectly express the lovely sweet fruit in his Ovello vineyards. Aromatic, perfumed nose, sweet cherry fruit, notes of menthol, pie spices, and sweet, fine tannins.
“Cantina del Pino is a great source for top-notch wines from Barbaresco.” -Wine Advocate
2004 SORI PAITIN, Barbaresco ‘Sori Paitin’ $40
The outstanding 2004 vintage finds a more powerful, intense, darker fruit and tobacco-note expression in this bottling from Paitin (pie-teen).
2001 SORI PAITIN, Barbaresco ‘Vecchie Vigne’ $85 ( special 6 bottle price $68 ) Since bottling their first Barbaresco in 1893, the Pasquera family continues most proud of their “old vines” Barbaresco with its structure, complexity, and classic character.
2000 ROAGNA, Barbaresco ‘Paje’ $62
“Roagna is one of my favorites and always a great value…”—Eric Asimov, NY Times 2/4/09
