ERIC BROEGE, VINTAGES’ wine director, will pour and discuss the attributes of this powerful, complex wine and debunk the myths that surround it. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to taste the highest expression of the noble nebbiolo grape– only at VINTAGES!
2004 MARCARINI BAROLO “Brunate” (La Morra) $62 “Soaring aromatics emerge from the estate’s 2004 Barolo Brunate. Menthol, dark cherries, spices, new leather and licorice are all to be found in this generous, layered wine. Sweet, ripe tannins provide a lovely bookend to this rich, classic Barolo from the Brunate vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. 93 pts.“-Wine Advocate
2004 BURLOTTO BAROLO “Monvigliero”(Verduno) $75 -VINTAGES EXCLUSIVE The tradition of crushing the grapes using “foot treading” is still carried on for the nebbiolo from the hillside Monvigliero vineyard. The greatness of Monvigliero is captured by its signature aromatics, which are unique among Barolos. The amazingly intense perfume of provencal black olive tapenade, cedar and truffle is nothing less than hypnotic. Tremendous complexity, finesse, supple tannins, and long, lingering finish.
2003 GIACOMO CONTERNO BAROLO “Cascina Francia” (Serralunga) $110
“This deep, powerful Barolo reveals awesome richness and an almost liqueur-like quality to its fruit that is balanced by the chalky mineral notes that provide freshness on the finish and help convey an impression of notable balance. In 2003 there is no Monfortino, and the Cascina Francia surely benefits from the addition of that juice which is mostly felt in the wine’s depth… Simply put, this is a stunning Barolo.. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023. 94 pts.” -Wine Advocate
2001 CAPPELLANO BAROLO “Otin Fiorin” $79 (Serralunga)
Barolo master Teobaldo Cappellano died Feb. 21 at age 65. An unflagging advocate of authentic and natural winemaking traditions, he was opposed to critics’ use of scores for wines, believing they were a cause of divisiveness and market-driven winemaking. His was an important and original voice supporting distinctive Italian wines.
Stylistically, Cappellano’s are ultra-traditional Barolos meant for long aging. In their youth, they can be somewhat austere, with classic Serralunga aromas of wet leaves, iodine and minerals.
2000 CAVALLOTTO BAROLO “San Giuseppe Riserva” $72 (Castiglione Falletto)
“Cavallotto’s 2000 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe proves to be on another level. It displays a balsamic nose of spices, menthol and licorice, followed by deep layers of dark fruit and tar, with a backward, structured personality and potent tannins. This wine should start to be expressive around age 12-15 after which it will offer a long window of highly enjoyable drinking. 91 pts.”-Wine Advocate
1993 ROAGNA BAROLO Ris. “La Rocca e la Pira” $110 “Roagna is one of my favorites and always a great value.” –Eric Asimov, NYTimes
“Roagna’s 1993 Barolo Riserva La Rocca e La Pira spent a whopping eleven and a half years in oak! Its tannins have mostly melted away, leaving a sublime, ethereal Barolo redolent of dried roses, plums, prunes, baking spices, leather, menthol and anise. It possesses outstanding balance and enough underlying structure to drink well for another decade. The opportunity to purchase an older, ready to drink vintage directly from the producer doesn’t come around too often and Roagna should be commended for making wines like this 1993 Barolo Riserva available. It is a lovely effort. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017. 92 pts.”–Wine Advocate
