About the COGNO ESTATE, Novello, Piedmont Italy

Announcing… Piedmont wine dinner with Vicenza Alboini, representing the ELVIO COGNO estate in Barolo, Italy. The COGNO (“cone-yo”) estate is located in the village of Novello, housed in the old Cascina Nuova farmhouse surrounded by estate-owned vineyards. Winery owners Walter Fissore and his wife, Nadia Cogno, preside over this newly renovated estate, perched on a crag with a stunning 360-degree view of the magnificent Ravera vineyards. Eric and Carolyn had the opportunity to visit Walter and Nadia at their estate in September 2005, tasting their excellent range of reds—Dolcetto, Barbera, and award-winning Barolo-- and a very intriguing white, Anas-cetta. It’s very exciting to see them finally achieving recognition for their hard work in reviving the historic vineyards at Ravera di Novello. Hope you can join us for a taste of their outstanding achievement. Although Walter and Nadia won’t be able to join us, their winery representative, Vincenza Alboini, will present the wines.

The wines featured at the dinner:
2001 COGNO BAROLO “RAVERA” $65 Winner of “Three Glasses” Award
Walter Fissore says: “Best wine I’ve made with respect to terroir and the tradition of Nebbiolo. Very few wines give such a great and memorable emotion.”
“A wine with a rich and decadent fruit structure and a spice, meat and cedar undertone. Full-bodied, velvety and long. It goes on and on. 93 pts.” Wine Spectator
2000 COGNO BAROLO “VIGNA ELENA” $70 Single-vineyard in the Ravera cru planted with the most elegant and fine clone of the nebbiolo grape, called “Rosé.” The vineyard is named for their daughter, Elena, whose youthful drawing graces the label.
2004 ELVIO COGNO “ANAS-CETTA” Langhe Bianco $25 A’nascetta is a rare, indigenous varietal from Piedmont thought to be related to vermentino from Sardinia. Aged 7 months on the lees, this wine is quite aromatic and fresh, and offers viognier-like white flowers on the nose and pit-fruit flavors on the palate with underlying minerality that gives the wine complexity and structure. A surprising white from Piedmont!
2001 COGNO LANGHE ROSSO “MONTEGRILLI” $40. Blend of 50-50 Nebbiolo and Barbera.
2003 COGNO DOLCETTO D’ALBA VIGNA DEL MANDORLA $22
2000 COGNO BARBERA D’ALBA “BRICCO DEI MERLI” $35
Other wines available from ELVIO COGNO:
1999 COGNO BAROLO “RAVERA” $60
1998 COGNO BAROLO “RAVERA” $60
2000 COGNO BAROLO “RAVERA” $65
1998 COGNO BAROLO “VIGNA ELENA” 1.5L $145
Salut!
